Palm Beach Atlantic falls in volleyball national semifinals

The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s volleyball team came up short in its bid to return to the national championsh­ip match, falling Friday to Alaska-Anchorage 16-25, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25 in the NCAA Division II semifinals in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Olivia Finckel had 13 kills and Ally Rohn had 11 kills and 18 digs for the second-seeded Sailfish (32-4). Molly Burkhardt led the way with 36 assists and eight digs and Susie Forbes had 24 digs.

Chrisalyn Johnson had 17 kills for sixth-seeded Alaska-Anchorage.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue will hold its annual charity golf event, featuring stars from the PGA, LPGA and Champions tours, Monday at the Dye Preserve Golf Club in Jupiter. The event raises money and awareness for the dogs and puppies of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, the largest no-kill dog rescue in the southeaste­rn United States.

Players expected to compete include Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, Bill Horschel, Lexi Thompson, Keegan Bradley, Nick Price, Morgan Pressel, Gene Sauers, Ken Duke, Mark Calcavecch­ia, Jon Curran, Brad Faxon, Peter Jacobsen, Freddie Jacobson, Jamie Lovemark, Jesper Parnevik and Nicholas Thompson.

The Division II Junior Varsity Riviera Beach Chargers (ages 10-13) fell to the Hoffman Est a t es ( I l l . ) Hawks 35-7 in the 60th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando.

The loss capped a very successful year for the Cowboys (15-1), who advanced to the championsh­ip game with a 24-6 victory over Oak Cliff, Texas.
