JUPITER — Traffic will be lighter on Indiantown Road once Island Way is extended to Jupiter Park Drive, according to a plan presented to the Town Council on Tuesday night.

The $8 million project is near the Kennedy Estates neighborhood, an unincorporated area just south of Indiantown Road and just east of Interstate 95 in unincorporated Palm Beach County.

Expected to start in late 2018, the plan calls for a roundabout at 174th Street North and 68th Terrace North, landscaping, lighting, 6-foot-wide sidewalks and a 10-foot-wide shared use path.

“We’re working with residents and businesses in the area to meet everyone’s requirements,” Town Manager Andy Lukasik said.

The roadway will help allevi- ate traffic on the area, which is planned for development on both sides of Indiantown Road. The new roadway will divert approximately 5,000 trips daily between Island Way and Central Boulevard, according to town records.

The extension also will make it easier and safer for drivers at the Indiantown Road/Central Boulevard intersection, which had the most accidents in the town in 2014.

About 67,000 vehicles a day use Indiantown Road between I-95 and Island Way, according to county records.

About 58 vacant acres straddling Island Way just north of Indiantown Road and east of I-95 were bought June 27 by Crossroads 6101, a company managed by Simon and Schaumburg. Aerospace and engineering are planned for the property.
