Woman charged after baby tests positive for opiates

B OY N TO N B E AC H — A n 11-month-old baby tested positive for opiates and amphetamin­e Saturday, Boynton Beach police records show.

The boy’s caregiver took him to Bethesda Hospital East because he was lethargic and falling asleep, records indicate. Tests show the baby, days shy of hi s first bir thday, had opiates and amphetamin­e in his system. A Florida Department of Children and Families investigat­or was at the hospital as well.

Amanda Warren, 25, told police she was visiting the baby the day before. Her relationsh­ip with the child is unclear, but the boy’s caregiver told offifficia­ls she looks after him while Warren is in treatment for drug addiction.

Warren told police she left her purse on the flfloor next to the boy’s crib. She had heroin-infused needles and unknown pills in her purse, police learned. She said the boy likely went through the purse and made contact with the drugs, possibly ingesting them.

Warren was arrested early Sunday on a charge of child neglect without great bodily harm. She was released from the Palm Beach County Jail under supervisio­n later that day and ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs, court records show.

I nve s t i g a t o r s wi t h t h e Department of Children and Families are looking into the case while the boy stays at a relative’s, DCF offifficia­ls said.
