Deputy suspended in connection to leaked video
Displayed on TMZ, it shows gunman firing in airport.
A Broward County Sheriff ’s deputy was suspended in connection to a leaked video of the fatal shootings at Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International Airport, according to the sheriff ’s office.
Deputy Michael Dingman, 4 6 , wa s s u s p e n d e d wi t h pay for several allegations including disclosure of use of confidential information and conduct unbecoming of an employee, according to a memo released by the sheriff ’s office. Dingman is assigned to work at the airport, the sheriff ’s office said. Dingman has been with the sheriff ’s office since 1996, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Records.
Broward Count y Sheriff Scott Israel said in a statement the investigation into the leaked video continues to be open and ongoing.
“We are making progress and aggressively pursuing this case,” he said.
The video released by the entertainment news website TMZ on Sunday appears to show Army veteran Esteban Santiago, 26, walking through the Terminal 2 baggage claim and pulling a weapon from his waistband, then firing into the crowd. Of the six people injured — in addition to the five killed — three gunshot victims remained at Broward Health Medical Center as of Tuesday morning.
Santiago, who made his first appearance in federal court Monday, faces federal charges including performing an act of violence at an international airport and causing the death of a person at an airport. Both charges are punishable by death.
In video, which appears to have been shot on a cellphone, there is a reflection of an individual seen in the screen. It’s unclear if Dingman is the direct source of the video, but sheriff ’s office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said she has not been told of any other deputies being investigated in the case at this time.
