HALLANDALE BEACH — Gulfstream Park’s featured race Saturday doesn’t have even a shred of history.

It more than makes up for that in intrigue.

G u l f s t r e a m o w n e r F r a n k Stronach’s effffffffffffort to reinvigorate the horse racing industry will debut this weekend as the world’s richest race with a staggering 12 million purse for the Pegasus World Cup Invitational.

Dangling a $7 million firstplace prize tends to get people’s attention, and in this c ase, it was enough to draw the biggest name in the sport — California Chrome — as well as his chief rival, Arrogate.

The plot managed to thicken Monday afternoon in the post-position draw. Arrogate drew the inside post. California Chrome landed on the far outside, No. 12.

While t he f i nal c hapter of their rivalry will be the focus once horses hit the track for the 1⅛-mile race, the dollar fifigure is expected to do the job of getting eyeballs on a sport that needs it.
