New coffee house aims to perk up area

Tequesta’s newest coffffffff­ffffee shop wants to perk up your senses, your appetite – and your immune system.

P e r k C o f f e e Ho u s e , a 25-seat café which opened last week, aims to do more than froth up your cup of joe. The new spot serves breakfast, lunch, smoothies, tonic shots and at least one trendy drink that’s proven to be the week’s hot seller.

That drink: golden milk, a powerful combo of turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. Perk serves the California Gold Dust powdered blend, which can be consumed in latte or smoothie form.

“It’s a natural anti-inflflamma­tor y, ” s ays Perk’s c o - owner Megan Woodard, who moved to Te que s t a nine months ago from California, where golden milk has a veritable cult following. Less than a week after opening the café, Woodard says she’s “almost sold out” of the stufffffff­fffff.

Her family moved to the area after her husband, Tom Woodard, an environmen­tal engineer, took a job transfer to Florida.

A restaurant industry veteran and mother of three daughters, Woodard says she needed something do to.” “I s a w t h i s p l a c e a n d jumped,” she says of the Tequesta Drive space that most recently housed the Coffffee Lounge. Helping her with those h e a l t h y f l a v o r s i s P a u l Azzario, a cook formerly with the Coffffee Lounge. In the morning, he’s making crepes, savory quinoa bowls, smoked salmon sandwiches and eggs. He also makes pastries and tarts.

“We’re not doing anything fried or sautéed,” he says. “Our special for the day was a kale frittata that was ovenbaked.”
