Seminoles’ offffffffffffense breaks out in win

A day after being held to just one hit in a 3-0 season-opening loss, the fififthranked Florida State baseball team bounced back with a 12-3 rout of VCU on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee.

Sophomore right-hander Cole Sands gave up two runs on four hits in 5 2/32/3 innings to earn the victory.

“What a difffffffffffference a day makes,” coach Mike Martin told Seminoles.com.

Sophomore outfifielder Jackson Lueck, who had FSU’s lone hit Friday, was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored Saturday. All-American junior shortstop Taylor Walls reached base four times and had two doubles and three RBIs. Freshman outfifielder J.C. Flowers was 2 for 2, and junior college transfer Rhett Aplin hit a towering home run.

The teams complete the series with the rubber game at 12:30 p.m. today.

Fl orida 8, William & Mary 1: Former American Heritage standout Jonathan India homered and drove in three runs, and former Palm Beach Gardens st ar JJ Schwarz was 3 for 3 with an RBI, leading the Gators 2-0) over the Tribe (0-2) in Gainesville.

Deacon Liput had two hits and scored two runs for the Gators, who opened their season Friday night by edging William & Mary 5-4.

Gators starter Brady Singer gave up one run on three hits and struck out six in fifive innings to earn the victory. Singer’s fastball reached as high as 97 mph.

Austin Langworthy, Frank Rubio and Andrew Baker combined for four scoreless innings to preserve the win.

The Gators will go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. today.

Mi a mi 8 , Ru t ge r s 4 : Michael Burns had two hits and drove in three runs and Romy Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, leading the No. 17 Hurricanes over the Scarlet Knights at Mark Light Field in Coral Gables.

Hurr i c a nes s t a r t e r Je b Bargfeldt gave up two runs (one earned) on fifive hits and struck out fifive in 52/32/3 innings to earn the victory.

The Hurricanes will go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. today.
