Heigl silences ‘Doubt’, takes chance again on new series
Heartbroken by the 2015 cancellation of “State of Affairs” — her comeback after five seasons on “Grey’s Anatomy” — Katherine Heigl wasn’t sure she wanted to take another chance on television. Then “Doubt” came along and erased any lingering questions.
Heigl plays Sadie Ellis, a New York lawyer of dazzling intellect and wardrobe who swoons for her Kennedy-esque client (Steven Pasquale), a pediatric surgeon and senator’s son accused of murdering his girlfriend two decades earlier. And that’s but one strand of the tangled web that i s Sadie’s life in thi s CBS Wednesday night drama, with a cast including Laverne Cox, Elliott Gould and a nearly unrecognizable Judith Light.
“I went, Oh, yeah, this character is sort of all the best things of Charlie from ‘State of Affairs’ and then the things we forgot, like a good sense of humor and charm and some sexy behindthe-scenes — or behind-the-courtroom — stuff,” Heigl said. “And that to me felt like a great opportunity to try again and do it right this time.”
Nearly a decade ago, Heigl transplanted herself from Hollywood to Utah, not far from Park City, where she lives with her husband, the singer-songwriter Josh Kelley; their daughters, Naleigh, 8, and Adalaide, 4; and their infant son, Joshua — with her mother right down the road. In a recent call, Heigl, 38, spoke about her other new role, as a scary mommy in the film “Unforgettable,” out in April. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
