German lurks a shot behind rookie leaders
PALM BEACH GARDENS — Martin Kaymer’s affiffinity for tough golf courses should have the rest of the fifield in this week’s Honda Classic worried.
Kaymer, whose 23 professional wins include a U.S. Open, PGA Championship and Players Championship, used a birdie-birdie fifinish to shoot a under 65 and pull within one shot of PGA Tour rookies Cody Gribble and Wesley Bryan after the fifirst round of the Honda Classic at PGA National Resort & Spa.
Indian Anirban Lahiri shares second place with Kaymer, while there is a seven-way tie for fourth at 66 that includes Jupiter’s Rickie Fowler and Ian Poulter.
Kaymer, 32, made the decision two years ago to play the bulk of his competitive golf close to his native Germany, and as a result lost his PGA Tour card.
