Tebow to play Wednesday
Former Heisman winner will play in first spring game.
Mets outfield prospect Tim Tebow will play in the first Grapefruit League game of his career Wednesday when New York hosts Boston in a split-squad game in Port S t . Luc i e , Fl a . , Newsday reported Sunday.
Tebow played in the Arizona Fall League and arrived in Florida early to work out. Now, the former Heisman Trophy winner will get his first chance to show how much progress he’s made in his transition to baseball.
Tebow, 29, also will play at home for Friday’s splitsquad game against Houston.
■ Coming back from major surgery in July, Matt Harvey made his first spring start Sunday and allowed four earned runs in 12/3 innings in the Mets’ 14-11 loss to the Cardinals.
“Overall, it’s only a matter of time,” Harvey said.
Harvey, who had a Tommy John operation in 2013, had his season cut short last year when he needed thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.
“Obviously, it’s been eight months s i n c e I ’ ve f a c e d another team. The biggest thing was going out there and trying to, I guess, get my mechanics back against another team and hitters,” he said. “You can go out there and do all of that with your own guys and catchers, but you can’t get to where you want to be unless you’re facing hitters.”
Cardinals: Trevor Rosenthal was scratched from his scheduled start today against Minnesota because of muscle tightness in his right lat. The 2014 All-Star reliever, 26, is trying to make a move into the starting rotation.
Giants: New first base coach Jose Alguacil suffered a broken nose and small fractures in his eye socket after being hit by a foul ball in Saturday’s spring training game. Alguacil, sitting in a folding chair outside the dugout when Kansas City’s Hunter Dozier checked his swing in the eighth inning, required surgery.
Mariners: Second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder/DH Nelson Cruz and infielder Jean Segura left camp to catch a plane to Florida, where their teammates from the Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic team are convening in preparation to defend their 2013 title. Segura is in the WBC for the first time. “It’s going to be really fun for us being around those guys,” Segura said. Ace Felix Hernandez was among 12 players, including both major leaguers and minor leaguers, the Mariners sent to the WBC.
Red Sox: Starter Kyle Kendrick, in camp as a nonroster invitee, threw four hitless innings in Sunday’s 11-1 win over the Braves.
