Offfffffff­fffense produces 18 hits, 7 doubles for No. 2 Warriors

WELLINGTON — Jupiter had plenty of offffense Thursday night in its 12-6 victory over Wellington in a battle of top-ranked softball teams.

The No. 2 Warriors had 18 hits, including seven doubles, in their 19th victory.

Jupiter goes into the fifinal week of the regular season at 19-2, while the No. 3 Wolverines, who hit two homers Thursday, dropped to 17-4.

“We’ve been working real hard on our offffense,” Warriors coach Steve Ahern said. “The girls made some really good adjustment­s and had great contact throughout the game.”

Both teams got their offffenses going early, with Jupiter scoring twice in the top of the first on RBIs by Madison Leonard and Ashley Goebel, and Wellington tying it in its half of the inning on Sarah Longley’s two-run homer.

The Warriors struck for three more runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead, with Megan McCants coming up with a two-out, two- run double.

Leonard’s two-out single in the fifth drove in another run and made it 6-2.

Kendall Baer followed with an RBI single, and Riley Benedetto added a two-run double.

Jupiter starter Ally Costa ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fififth, giving up three runs on a two-out, three- run homer to center by Kate DeSimone.

But the Warriors came right back, scoring three runs in the sixth on McCants’ two-run double and Baer’s RBI single.

McCants fifinished with three hits for the Warriors, including two doubles. Baer had two singles.

Wellington added a fifinal run in the seventh.

Costa, an Eckerd College signee, allowed six runs on six hits in 16th win. She struck out eight and walked four.

Cathy Vega, Katie Schmidt and DeSimone each had two hits for Wellington.
