Gators hammer Vanderbilt 20-8

After being shut out Friday night against Vanderbilt , the Gators bounced back Saturday with a 20-8 rout of the Commodores in Nashville, Tenn.

T h r e e G a t o r s — f i r s t baseman JJ Schwarz, right fielder Nelson Maldonado and catcher Mark Kolozsvary — drove in four runs apiece, and eight players in the lineup had multi-hit days in the 20-hit attack. Dalton Guthrie hit two solo home runs, and former Palm Beach Gardens standout Schwarz and Maldonado also homered for the Gators (24-12, 8-7 SEC), who lost to the Commodores (22-15, 7-8) 2-0 in Friday’s series opener.

The 20 runs were the most the Gators have scored in an SEC game since they tallied 24 against Auburn in 2009.

“Obviously, today was all based on the offense,” UF coach Kevin O’Sullivan told Floridagat­ors.com. “Did I see 20 runs? Of course not. Hopefully this is the game that gets us over the hump offensivel­y.”

Miami 5, Pittsburgh 3: Third baseman Edgar Michelange­li hit a two-run home r un a nd Michael Mediavilla gave up one run in 5⅔ innings, as the Hurricanes (17-19, 9-9 ACC) took the rubber game of the series against the Panthers (15-17, 7-11) in Pittsburgh.

“It was a big win for us, no question,” UM coach Jim Morris told Hurricanes­ports. com. “I think Pitt has the best club they’ve had since we’ve been playing them in the ACC. They have a good club and really good pitching.”

Mediavilla, a junior lefthander, surrendere­d five hits, struck out four and walked two while improved to 4-4 on the season.

Shortstop Randy Batista, left fielder James Davison and center fielder Carl Chester each collected two hits to lead the Hurricanes’ 10-hit attack.

FAU 1 2 , Ma r s h a l l 6 : Shortstop Tyler Frank, a former American Heritage standout, was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, helping the Owls (24-9-1, 11-3 Conference USA) to the victory over the Thundering Herd (17-17, 6-8) in Boca Raton.

R i g h t f i e l d e r D a v i d Miranda, third baseman Austin Langham, center fielder Jordan Poore, a former Park Vista star, and left fielder Eric Rivera also collected two hits apiece in the Owls’ 13-hit attack.
