Giants lose ace to bike accident

Bumgarner leaves hospital after spill hurts shoulder, ribs.

San Francisco Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his big league career Friday after a dirt bike accident that sent him to a hospital with bruised ribs and a sprained joint in his pitching shoulder.

The accident occurred Thursday during an off day in Colorado. The Giants said Bumgarner is out of the hospital and resting at the team hotel. He is scheduled to be re-evaluated next week.

“I think the main thing is you have to be grateful he’s not hurt worse than he is,” Giants catcher Buster Posey said.

Bumgarner, 27, is 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA in four 2017 starts.

A l s o F r i d a y, ma n a g e r Bruce Bochy rejoined the team. Bochy missed a twogame series at Kansas City following a heart procedure.

Rangers: Right-hander A. J. Griffin was placed on the 10-day DL with inflammati­on in his left ankle.

■ Outfielder Josh Hamilton, 36, was released from his minor league contract.

Red Sox: Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (right knee sprain) was activated from the disabled list and utility player Brock Holt was placed on the 10-day DL with vertigo.

M e t s : P i t c h e r J a c o b deGrom was scratched from his start Friday because of a stiff neck. Also, first baseman Lucas Duda (left elbow) and infielder Wilmer Flores (infected right knee) were put on the 10-day DL. The Mets also aren’t expected to play outfielder Yoenis Cespedes in the three - game series because of a hamstring injury, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was out with a hamstring problem and catcher Travis d’Arnaud was out with a bruised right wrist.

Nationals: Shortstop Trea Turner (right hamstring) was activated from the 10-day DL.

Roya l s : S e c o n d b a s e - man Raul Mondesi and right fielder Paulo Orlando were sent to Triple-A after slow starts and outfielder Jorge Bonifacio was promoted to make his MLB debut.

Noteworthy: Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has the most popular jersey in baseball, taking over the top spot from retired Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz. The Cubs had four of the top five sellers: first baseman Anthony Rizzo is second, infielder Javier Baez is fourth and left fielder Kyle Schwarber fifth. Dodgers pitcher Clay ton Kershaw is third.
