WEST PALM BEACH — The big-eyed pup left for dead last month during a fire at a West Palm Beach homeless camp has a long road to recovery, according to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

To cover the 2-year- old mix breed’s climbing medical costs, OAK Bistro and Wine Bar is hosting a fundraiser Sunday afternoon at the Royal Palm Beach restaurant on Southern Boulevard.

The dog — named Smokey by a city Fire Rescue captain who hopes to foster the pup — has deep burns that have impacted the muscle tissue, according to Rich Anderson, executive director and CEO of the Peggy Adams.

Smokey has had multiple blood transfusions, Anderson said, and is under 24-hour care at Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Center. Veterinarians say Smokey’s treatment plan changes day-today.

It is unclear what Smokey’s medical expenses will total,

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officials said Smokey had been adopted from Peggy Adams by a couple who lost their home soon afterward.

The dog was chained to a tree March 28 at a homeless camp on the 2500 block of Australian Avenue, just north of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, fire officials said.

Capt. Gregg Gordon, who plans to foster Smokey once the dog is able, said rescue crews heard barking, then saw the badly burned pup.

“The little guy was burned up pretty good.” Gordon said. “Even when we grabbed him, he was very distressed. I was concerned whether he would live.”
