Gardens park with zip lines, playground big hit with kids
City Council approved $106,800 of playground gear for the new park.
PALM BEACH GARDENS — Threeyear-old Chance Boynton could hardly contain his excitement when he got to Palm Beach Gardens’ new park on a recent afternoon.
“Daddy, Daddy, I want to go on the swings,” Chance, sporting a pair of Spider-Man sunglasses, told his dad.
Every evening after school and before dinner, a parade of young children like Chance and their parents from the surrounding neighborhood arrive at Ironwood Park. The pocket park is at 10110 Ironwood Road, across the street from Palm Beach Gardens Elementary School.
The park has two zip lines, a swing set and children’s playground. The Palm Beach Gardens City Council in November agreed to buy about $106,800 of playground equipment for the park, which recently opened.
Four-year-old Emma Murphy’s little pink bicycle with glittery pom-poms hanging from the handle bars adorned with Disney princesses was parked just inside the fence while her dad, Joe Murphy, pushed her in a chair hooked up to the zip line. Emma, clutching her doll, hopped out of the chair before deciding she hadn’t yet had enough. She hopped back in.
“She’s the one who wanted to come here today,” Murphy said. “This wasn’t in any of the other parks that we’ve been to, and since it’s so close, it’s convenient.”
City Councilman Carl Woods pushed for the park as the start of a beautification project for the neighborhood around Holly Drive. He said he hopes to see it continue with code enforcement officers bringing the homes and rental homes in the area into compliance with city regulations.
