PBSO: Two men killed in shooting were targeted

GREENACRES — The two young men shot to death Thursday afternoon near a city park were targeted by the gunman, the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office said Friday.

T h o u g h n o o n e h a d b e e n arrested as of Friday evening in the deaths of Matthew Makarits, 22, and Marcus Stukes, 21, the sheriff ’s office stressed there is no immediate threat to the public.

Authoritie­s have not released any informatio­n about either a suspect or a motive in the slayings.

The men were found dead at about 2 p.m., their bodies left near Bowman Park off Haverhill Road in the city’s east end, near the Palm Springs border. Deputies roped off a stretch of Bowman Street, about a block from the shooting, and locked down three nearby schools — John I. Leonard High, L.C. Swain Middle and Greenacres Elementary — in the hour or so after the shooting.

The deaths were the first homicides in Greenacres since Nov. 19, 2015, when two men were stabbed in their home on Chickasaw Circle.

Funeral details for Makarits and Stukes were not available Friday.
