After months of sifting through free agents and studying hundreds of NFL draft prospects, the Dolphins still have a lot of work remaining to fifinalize their roster for the upcoming season.

Miami went into the offffseason with several concerns to address, mostly on defense, and started on that task by picking up veteran linebacker Lawrence Timmons and safety Nate Allen. The team made a few more moves to fortify its defense before loading up in the draft, and offffffffffffensively left most of the pieces from 2016 intact.

This month marks the Dolphins’ next phase of determining whether what they have is enough to make a run at New England in the AFC East and return to the playoffffs for the second straight season. They haven’t put together back-to-back postseason berths since 2001.

Many players have been working out at the facility for a while now, and the rookies get on the fifield for minicamp Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Dolphins drafted seven prospects last week and expect to have an additional 14 undrafted players in Davie, though they have not officially announced those signings.

Whoever survives out of that group gets to come back for the fifirst of four straight weeks beginning May 23 to compete with the veterans and start angling for jobs. Miami will hold organized team activities that week and the next two, followed by a three-day minicamp in mid-June before the players get a month or so offff leading up to training camp.
