Belle Glade teen charged as adult in fatal DUI crash

A 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday afternoon in the head- on c rash that killed a 60-year-old man in Belle Glade this January.

Juan Hernandez-Guillen, 17, is charged as an adult with DUI homicide, DUI with serious injury and DUI with property damage, according to Palm Beach County Jail records.

Judge Dina Keever-Agrama set his bail at $35,000 at a hearing Wednesday morning at the jail. She also ordered him to wear an ankle monitor to check for alcohol use and to have no contact with the victim’s family.

The attorney for Hernan- See highlights of Juan Hernandez-Guillen’s first appearance at dez-Guillen said the teen is in his final weeks of high school and has “absolutely no criminal history.”

On Jan. 29, Hernandez-Guill e n was dr iv i ng nor t h on Southwest 16th Street at 3 a.m, according to the original report by the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office. Hernandez-Guillen began to drift into the southbound lanes in his 2006 Ford F-250 truck when he hit a 1989 GMC S15 head-on, the sheriff ’s office said.

Genero Ortiz, the driver of the GMC, died at the scene and his passenger, Jose Carbajal, 51, was seriously injured. Both men were wearing seat belts, according to the sheriff ’s office.

Hernandez- Guillen was taken to Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, where he told investigat­ors he had been drinking beer that night. After a signed search warrant was obtained, his blood was drawn that night and the blood-alcohol levels read 0.121 and 0.087. The legal limit in Florida is 0.08.

Boynton Beach police have accused a former college basketball player of inappropri­ately touching himself while inside the children’s department at the Macy’s store at the Boynton Beach Mall, according to an arrest report.

Korey Allen Spates, 29, is facing a charge of lewd and lascivious behavior. He was released from the Palm Beach County Jail late Tuesday after posting $10,000 bail.

Spates, a native of Cleveland who lives in Deerfield Beach, is a former high school basketball sensation in Ohio who averaged 10 points as a freshman at Purdue University in 2006 before he was kicked off the team.

Boynton Beach police say that Spates was seen Monday at about 8:30 p.m. inside Macy’s with his hands in his pants “displaying eye movements toward customers.” Children were in the area while Spates was allegedly touching himself during a 10-minute period.

W h e n s t o r e s e c u r i t y approached Spates, he ran away and was found hiding behind bushes near the mall’s Dillard’s store.

After his arrest, Spates d e n i e d t h e a c c u s a t i o n s and told police he was just “scratching” himself, the report said.

After being advi sed of his rights, Spates allegedly admitted becoming aroused a f t e r s t a r i n g a t a s t o r e employee.

Spates, who played guard, was runner-up for Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 2004 as a high school junior and accepted a scholarshi­p to Purdue. He failed to last his freshman season at the school after being dismissed for “conduct detrimenta­l to the team.”

In 2007, Spates landed at Kent State but was released from his scholarshi­p reportedly after a conflict with the team’s coach.
