Monumental need for safe place for abused teenagers in Boynton

- NORMA LEWIS, BOYNTON BEACH

There is a problem here in Boynton Beach. We have places for women to go for domestic abuse, but there is no safe place for teenagers. The teachers know firsthand of the problem, and it is monumental with no easy fix. I recently learned about the problem and how bad it is.

There is a solution, but it will take a lot of planning. I believe the funding will be there, however. We can handle that with a Fund for Teenagers account. I know the people will be generous, but we need to have a plan and a solution.

It has to be a central place in Boynton Beach, and would, I believe be like a dormitory-type structure. A place where teenagers can feel safe, a place where no one can barge in and confront them, or perhaps want them to come back home for more abuse.

Now, many teenagers don’t even want to go home from school because of a bad home situation. Some have been kicked out of the house. Some parents are on drugs. There’s constant fighting in the home, and more. These teens just need a place to go, a safe place where they can study and do their homework.

Can you imagine not being wanted in your own home? These children need to be able to concentrate on being a child.

So, perhaps the first thing is to find property to accommodate a large dormitory-type structure. Then plans would be needed for a structure that would accommodate a large number of teenagers. If we found a spot now, for say 25 (teens), it would be filled the first night. And there would be a long list of those waiting.

We must get this project started, and the sooner the better. Young lives are at stake. I know there are people who will be willing to help once they are aware of the problem. We must confront this problem and make a difference in the lives of the young people of Boynton Beach. They need your help.

Boynton Beach High School has a pantry where students can get food to eat there or take home. I take food for the pantry, but I know they need more. The kids are so grateful for what people bring. No child should be hungry.
