Man killed after making fun of another’s gun

RIVIERA BEACH — A 39-yearold man living in Riviera Beach is facing a first-degree murder charge after he shot and killed another man Saturday who made fun of his firearm, according to an arrest report.

Jose Chacon is being held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail. Chacon is also facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Alfonso Rodriguez, 41, died at the scene. Chacon and Rodriguez were “seasonal roofing workers” who lived in the same residence in the 700 block of West Seventh Street, the report said.

C h a c o n a n d Ro d r i g u e z began to argue at about 7:30 a.m., residents at the home told Riviera Beach police.

Chacon allegedly pointed the gun at Rodriguez, who joked because the .38-caliber semiautoma­tic weapon did not go off.

“Shoot me … your gun does not work,” Chacon said Rodriguez told him.

Chacon told police he asked Rodriguez if he wanted to see whether his gun shoots, then fired once, striking the victim in the upper left chest, the report said. Chacon also allegedly pointed his gun at two other residents and pulled the trigger several times but the weapon did not fire.

Chacon told police he shot Rodriguez because he was armed with a knife. The other residents told police Rodriguez was not holding the knife when he was shot.
