Braves’ Freeman to miss 10 weeks
First baseman has a broken wrist after being hit by a pitch.
Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman sustained a fractured left wrist when he was hit by a pitch and is expected to miss about 10 weeks.
Freeman was hit by Toronto’s Aaron Loup during the fifth inning of an 8-4 victory on Wednesday night.
Freeman had an MRI and other tests Thursday that showed the fracture.
“Obviously, this is quite disappointing,” Freeman said, wearing a green cast on his left wrist. No surgery will be required.
Freeman said he knows Loup had “no intent” to hit him with the pitch.
“He was just trying to get me out,” Freeman said. “The best way to get me out is to throw inside. He just threw one that got away.”
Freeman said he feared he sustained a fracture when first examined by trainer Jim Lovell on the field and Lovell “told me to squeeze his hand and obviously I couldn’t do it.”
Freeman was Atlant a’s most productive hitter. He was hitting .341 and tied for the major league lead with 14 homers.

Blue Jays: Center fielder Kevin Pillar was suspended two games for yelling an antigay slur at a Braves pitcher.
The Blue Jays suspended Pillar without pay shortly after he apologized in a statement, saying he was “completely and utterly embarr a s s e d ” by t h e word h e directed at Jason Motte.
Pillar was angry at Motte for allegedly quick-pitching him to get a strikeout that ended the seventh inning in Atlanta’s victory Wednesday night.
Replays appeared to show Pillar using the slur as he shouted toward the mound. After what he described as a sleepless night, the player acknowledged wrongdoing.
“I regret saying it,” Pillar told reporters at SunTrust Park a few hours before the finale of a four-game series against the Braves. “I’m going to use myself as an example of how there are words out there you can’t use. It’s not a word I use ever. … It’s something that just came out.”
Toronto general manager Ross Atkins flew to Atlanta to apologize on behalf of the organization and announce the suspension, which he said was deemed appropriate by Major League Baseball and Commissioner Rob Manfred.
Pillar missed Thursday’s game against the Braves and will sit out today’s game at Baltimore. He will forfeit approximately $6,066 of his $550,000 salary, with the money donated to charity.
