Local shooting victim says goodbye to Florida
Former condo manager is starting new chapter near family in Virginia.
It was a bittersweet May for Jeremy Hilton Holland, the former Palm Beach condo manager who was shot in the head by a disgruntled employee two years ago.
Holland was seriously injured when Charles Michael Croghan shot him at point-blank range on Oct. 3, 2014. Since then, Holland has endured intensive rehabilitation therapy to regain some normalcy in his life.
At one point, he underwent hyperbaric oxygen treatments to improve his mental function and treat his recurring headaches. But the injuries were extensive enough that Holland said can’t use his left leg below the knee and most of his left arm.
But things are looking up for the 42-year-old, who at the end of last month moved to Buckingham County, Virginia. He plans to get back into real estate after spending some more time recovering there.
Holland and several friends gathered recently at The Old Key Lime House in Lantana for a farewell party.
“This is goodbye because after this I won’t see most of these people again, like, probably ever,” Holland said.
He recalled the struggles he faced in the last two years, especially his dismay that his assailant didn’t live out his full sentence. Croghan died April 4 in prison while serving a 20-year sentence for attempted manslaughter and aggravated assault with a fifirearm.
Croghan’s death came exactly one year after he entered the Everglades Correctional Institution, according to Florida Department of Corrections records. An investigation into his death is underway.
