League punishes Puig for gesture

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was suspended one game and fined by MLB for making an obscene gesture to Indians fans Tuesday night.

Puig flashed the middle finger on both hands at fans sitting behind home plate at Progressive Field after hitting a home run in the second inning.

Puig is appealing the decision and played Wednesday night. Puig said he “stooped” to the level of fans who he said were heckling him in the on-deck circle. Puig said the group of fans kept talking to him after the home run.

Manager Dave Roberts said Puig regretted the incident.

“It’s something that he wishes didn’t happen,” Roberts said. “He didn’t appreciate what was being said, and he reacted.”

Marlins: Ichiro Suzuki had a pinch-hit infield single Wednesday for his 365th interleague hit, breaking Derek Jeter’s MLB record.

Padres: Hunter Renfroe’s 14th homer tied Nate Colbert for the most home runs by a Padres rookie before the All-Star break. Colbert went on to hit 24 home runs in the expansion 1969 season.

Orioles: First baseman Chris Davis was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.

Braves: Third baseman Adonis Garcia is expected to miss two months after having surgery to repair ligament damage in his left ring finger.

Athletics: Right fielder Matt Joyce left Wednesday’s game in the third, one inning after he cut his chin colliding with first baseman Yonder Alonso pursuing a popup, which Alonso caught. Joyce received three stitches.

White Sox: Right-hander James Shields, 35, is scheduled to start Sunday at Toronto after missing the past two months with a strained right back muscle.

Nationals: Darren Baker, the teenage son of manager Dusty Baker, was drafted by Washington in the 27th round of the MLB draft.
