Sprinter Gatlin runs to U.S. 100 title
Veteran sprinter Justin Gatlin, 35, surged past NCAA champion Christian Coleman to win the men’s 100 meters late Friday at the U.S. track and field championships in Sacramento, Calif. Gatlin finished in 9.95 seconds to edge Coleman by 0.03 seconds. Christopher Belcher finished third. Awaiting the trio in August: Jamaican Usain Bolt for the world championships in London.
Saturday’s early winners included Paul Chelimo (men’s 5,000); Mason Finley (men’s discus); Riley Dolezal (men’s javelin); Sam Kendricks (men’s pole vault); Raven Saunders (women’s shot put); and Tianna Bartoletta (women’s long jump).
Soccer: Host nation Russia could not avoid early elimination at the Confederations Cup in Kazan, falling 2-1 to Mexico in a result that secured the Mexicans a place in the semifinals of the World Cup warm-up tournament. Nestor Araujo and Hirving Lozano scored for Mexico. Portugal advanced after beating New Zealand 4-0 in St. Petersburg. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 75th international goal, on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, helped lift Portugal.
