Sprinter Gatlin runs to U.S. 100 title

Veteran sprinter Justin Gatlin, 35, surged past NCAA champion Christian Coleman to win the men’s 100 meters late Friday at the U.S. track and field championsh­ips in Sacramento, Calif. Gatlin finished in 9.95 seconds to edge Coleman by 0.03 seconds. Christophe­r Belcher finished third. Awaiting the trio in August: Jamaican Usain Bolt for the world championsh­ips in London.

Saturday’s early winners included Paul Chelimo (men’s 5,000); Mason Finley (men’s discus); Riley Dolezal (men’s javelin); Sam Kendricks (men’s pole vault); Raven Saunders (women’s shot put); and Tianna Bartoletta (women’s long jump).

Soccer: Host nation Russia could not avoid early eliminatio­n at the Confederat­ions Cup in Kazan, falling 2-1 to Mexico in a result that secured the Mexicans a place in the semifinals of the World Cup warm-up tournament. Nestor Araujo and Hirving Lozano scored for Mexico. Portugal advanced after beating New Zealand 4-0 in St. Petersburg. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 75th internatio­nal goal, on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, helped lift Portugal.
