Family of hit-and-run victim learned he died via Facebook
The man tried to cross Sixth Avenue South early Friday.
The family of a father of two who was killed in a hitand-run crash last week west of Lake Worth has begun funeral arrangements after learning through Facebook that he was dead.
Corey Justice, 27, was killed after being hit by multiple vehicles while trying to cross Sixth Avenue South west of Interstate 95, near John Prince Park, about 5:30 a.m. Friday, the sheriff ’s office said.
Authorities originally thought Justice was homeless, but family members said he had moved to West Palm Beach for work about six months ago from South Shore, Ky., a small city about 100 miles southeast of Cincinnati. It was in South Shore that he discovered his love of horses and the outdoors, according to his great aunt Vina Colley.
The family, which is large and close, was devastated when it learned of his death days after it happened from consolations that were posted by friends on his Facebook page, Colley said.
Justice, who was athletic and outgoing, could break any horse you put him on, his great-aunt said.
“He (was) just a little country boy,” Colley said.
It wasn’t immediately known where Justice was working in Palm Beach County. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers when he lived in Kentucky.
A funeral service will be held for Justice this morning in South Shore.
Justice was hit by a truck that disappeared after the collision and is believed to be an older model Ford F-600 or F-800, the sheriff ’s office said. Justice was then hit by several other vehicles that remained at the scene.
The truck, which would likely have a broken driver’s side headlight and turn signal, and its driver are still at large, the sheriff ’s office said.
Anyone with information about the fatal crash is asked to call Investigator Christopher Doerr at 561-681-4538 or Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458TIPS (8477)
