THE ROUNDUP

-

■ No. 4 Penn State 45, Indiana 14 DaeSean Hamilton caught nine passes for 122 yards with three TDs and became Penn State’s career receptions leader on Saturday as the Nittany Lions beat the visiting Hoosiers. Hamilton caught his first two TDs from quarterback Trace McSorley and a third from running back Saquon Barkley to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter. He hauled in his 180th career catch midway through the fourth quarter to set the record held by Deon Butler since 2008.

Barkley returned the game’s opening kickoff 98 yards for a TD and finished with 221 yards. Penn State turned two first-quarter Indiana turnovers into TDs. McSorley added a rushing touchdown, Nick Scott scored on a fumble return and Tyler Davis added a pair of field goals for Penn State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten). The Hoosiers fell to 2-2, 0-2.

■ No. 6 Washington 42, Oregon State 7

The Beavers held the Huskies to a mere 7-0 halftime lead before the second half turned into a rout. The Huskies (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) led 28-0 by the end of the third quarter. The Beavers fell to 1-4, 0-2.

■ No. 16 Washington State 30, No. 5 USC 27

Luke Falk threw for 340 yards and two TDs, Erik Powell kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1 minute, 40 seconds left and the Cougars upset the Trojans on a wild Friday night. The Cougars stopped USC star quarterback Sam Darnold and pulled off their first regular-season win over a top-five opponent in a quarter-century. The last time a top-five team was handed a loss by Washington State was in 1992 when the Drew Bledsoe-led Cougars rolled rival Washington in a driving snowstorm.

Washington State (5-0, 2-0) had lost 15 consecutive home games against ranked opponents. This was its first win over the Trojans since 2002 — also a 30-27 Cougars victory.

Falk was excellent against USC (4-1, 2-1) most of the time as Darnold hit 15 of 29 passes for 164 yards and an interception. He has thrown eight interceptions in five games after throwing nine interceptions all of last season.

■ No. 7 Georgia 41, Tennessee 0

Jake Fromm threw a TD pass and ran for two more scores in Knoxville, Tenn., as the Bulldogs dealt the Volunteers their first shutout loss in nearly a quarter-century. Nick Chubb added 109 yards rushing as Georgia raced to its first 5-0 start since 2012, the last year the Bulldogs reached the SEC championship game. Tennessee (3-2, 0-2) was shut out for the first time since a 31-0 loss to Florida in 1994.

The Bulldogs got more good news in the fourth quarter when QB Jacob Eason made his first appearance since spraining his left knee in the season opener. Fromm was 7 of 15 for 84 yards and also rushed for 20 yards before giving way to Eason with the game well in hand.

Georgia (2-0 SEC) made sure there would be no frantic finishes or dramatic comebacks this time.

■ No. 10 Wisconsin 33, Northwestern 24

Jonathan Taylor ran for two TDs to help the offense overcome a sluggish start as the Badgers used defense to swarm Northwestern before holding on for a win in Madison. Alex Hornibrook threw for 197 yards and a TD, settling down after two interceptions in the first half, and Garrett Dooley had three of Wisconsin’s eight sacks. Northwestern’s last drive was thwarted when QB Clayton Thorson couldn’t find a receiver out of his own end zone and was sacked by D’Cota Dixon for a safety. Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0) stood up the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) late to seal the win in each team’s Big Ten opener.

■ No. 11 Ohio State 56, Rutgers 0

J.T. Barrett threw three TD passes and passed Art Schlichter to become Ohio State’s career passing yardage leader, Mike Weber ran for a career-high three TDs and the visiting Buckeyes (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) blanked Rutgers (1-4, 0-2) for a second straight year. Ohio State outgained Rutgers 628-209. Barrett finished 14 of 22 for 275 yards. He has 7,622 yards passing. Barrett’s 364 yards in total offense (89 rushing) put him over 10,000 for his career (10,350).

■ No. 13 Auburn 49, No. 24 Mississippi State 10

Jarrett Stidham passed for 264 yards and two TDs and Kerryon Johnson ran for three scores as the Tigers (4-1, 2-0 SEC) beat the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-2), who have lost two straight lopsided games since blowing out LSU. Stidham launched a handful of deep balls for Auburn, including a 47-yard TD to Will Hastings and a 57-yarder to Eli Stove. He wound up 13-of-16 passing. Johnson gained 116 yards.

■ No. 14 Miami 31, Duke 6

Malik Rosier threw two TD passes and ran for another score, and Miami’s defense shut down Duke late Friday in a win for the Hurricanes (3-0, 1-0 ACC). Rosier threw for 270 yards. Duke (4-1, 1-1) finished with 349 yards but converted just 5 of 19 third downs.

■ No. 17 Louisville 55, Murray State 10

Lamar Jackson threw for 249 yards and three TDs, playing just over a half as the Cardinals (4-1) routed the visiting Racers (1-4). The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, who had just one play after halftime, added 100 yards rushing and a TD on seven carries. He’s 13 yards short of becoming the seventh player in ACC history to reach 10,000 total career yards. Jawon Pass stepped in after Jackson, throwing for 115 yards and one TD, and added another TD on the ground with 29 seconds left.

■ No. 18 South Florida 61, East Carolina 31

South Florida’s defense sprung a few leaks in Greenville, N.C., but Quinton Flowers threw for two TDs and ran for another as USF (5-0, 2-0 American) extended its school-record winning streak to 10 by beating the Pirates (1-4, 1-1).

■ No. 21 Florida 38, Vanderbilt 24

Lamical Perine scored three TDs, Malik Davis added two and the Gators (3-1, 3-0 SEC) won at home despite losing quarterback Luke Del Rio for the season to a broken left collarbone. Perine bookended two 1-yard plunges around a 13-yard scamper as the Gators defeated the Commodores (3-2, 0-2) for the 26th time in the past 27 meetings.

■ No. 22 Notre Dame 52, Miami (Ohio) 17

Brandon Wimbush threw for three TDs and ran for another as the Fighting Irish beat the visiting RedHawks for the 900th win in school history. Josh Adams added TD runs of 72 and 59 yards in the first half before leaving the game with a leg injury. He led the Irish (4-1) with 159 yards on the ground. It was only the second meeting between the Irish and the RedHawks (2-3), whose QB Gus Ragland threw for 262 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns to James Gardner (five catches for 115 yards).

■ Troy 24, No. 25 LSU 21

Jordan Chunn ran for 191 yards and a touchdown, Troy’s defense forced four turnovers and the Trojans upset the Tigers. Troy celebrated wildly with traveling fans in largely empty Tiger Stadium as time ran out, after becoming the first team from outside the SEC to win in LSU’s Death Valley since UAB in 2000. They snapped the Tigers’ streak of 49 straight home victories over non-league opponents.

The Tigers (3-2) were three-TD favorites but had looked vulnerable, while Troy (4-1) came in on a three-game winning streak and is among the favorites to win the Sun Belt Conference after a 10-victory 2016 campaign.
