Beckham to have surgery

Giants receiver out for rest of season with broken ankle.

The winless New York Giants are going to be without offensive catalyst Odell Beckham Jr. for the rest of the season.

The Giants announced Monday that Beckham will have surgery for his broken left ankle later this week, and his season officially ended when he was put on injured reserve later in the day along with fellow receiver Dwayne Harris.

“It’s a sad situation,” coach Ben McAdoo said

The 24-year-old Beckham was hurt late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 27-22 loss to Los Angeles when Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward fell on his ankle and pinned it to the turf.

Beckham is a three-time Pro Bowler who has led the Giants in receiving in each of his first three seasons.

He was the last of four Giants receivers knocked out of the game.

Harris, who also returns punts and kickoffs, will have surgery Tuesday for a broken foot. He was hurt in the third quarter.

Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard were hurt on the same series in the second quarter after falling while trying to catch passes. Marshall was undergoing further testing and examination Monday. Shepard is listed as day to day.

The Giants re-signed Tavarres King and signed Travis Rudolph off their practice squad to help wide receiver Roger Lewis Jr. for Sunday’s game in Denver.

The Giants also signed wide receiver Darius Powe to replace Rudolph on the practice squad.

McAdoo added there are no plans at this point to re-sign fan favorite Victor Cruz, who was released after last season.

Dolphins: Offensive line coach Chris Foerster, 55, resigned, apologized and

Y.A. TITTLE said he was seeking medical help after a video on social media appeared to show him snorting three lines of white powder at a desk.

Hours after the video was posted on Facebook and Twitter, Foerster announced his departure in a statement released by the team.

“I am resigning from my position with the Miami Dolphins and accept full responsibility for my actions,” he said. “I want to apologize to the organization, and my sole focus is on getting the help that I need, with the support of my family and medical professionals.”

Foerster has been an NFL assistant since 1992 and joined Adam Gase’s staff in Miami last year.

Texans: Defensive end J.J. Watt and linebacker Whitney Mercilus will miss the rest of the season.

Watt broke his left leg and Mercilus tore a pectoral muscle in the loss to Kansas City.

Watt sustained a tibial plateau fracture to end his season early for the second straight year. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year returned in 2017 after missing the last 13 games of last season following his second back surgery. The defensive end played every game in his first five seasons in the NFL before his injury last year.

Mercilus, who is in his sixth season, started each game this year and had 10 tackles and a sack.

Raiders: Quarterback Derek Carr is expected to return to the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Chargers — two weeks after suffering a broken bone in his back — but the team will be without reserve defensive tackle Darius Latham for four games because of a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Coach Jack Del Rio confirmed Carr’s return, saying, “I anticipate he’ll be ready to go. He was pushing pretty hard last week.”

Bucs: Kicker Patrick Murray was picked up for his second stint with the team after struggling Nick Folk — who missed three field goals in last Thursday’s loss to New England — was placed on injured reserve with a “minor injury classification.”

Rams: Safety Maurice Alexander was waived a day after he was a surprise healthy scratch in the loss to Seattle, and the team used the roster spot to bring back wide receiver Mike Thomas, who was suspended for a violation of the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Lions: Defensive end Armonty Bryant was released after being suspended for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and then sitting out Sunday’s loss to Carolina.

Vikings: Running back Stevan Ridley was released after only five days with the team to make room for wide receiver Michael Floyd’s return from a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Jets: The team added wide receiver Jalin Marshall to the active roster and waived cornerback Marcus Williams. Marshall was suspended the first four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancers.

Bills: Starting tight end Charles Clay will be out indefinitely after having surgery on his left knee.
