Injured del Potro advances to semis
Juan Martin del Potro’s bruised left wrist was placed in a splint after a nasty fall while winning his quarterfinal at the Shanghai Masters. Del Potro, who ended up breaking Viktor Troicki’s serve in that fifth game and prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, will play Roger Federer in today’s semifinals. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal meets Marin Cilic in the other semifinal.

Boxing: WBA super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara will make the sixth defense of his title against undefeated contender Terrell Gausha tonight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Also on the card is WBC super welterweight champ Jermell Charlo facing No. 1 contender Erickson Lubin and IBF junior middleweight title holder Jarrett Hurd making his first defense against ex-champion Austin Trout.
College basketball: Rivals Kansas and Missouri will play an exhibition men’s basketball game at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 22 to raise money for hurricane relief efforts. Each school will distribute about half of the 18,000 tickets with the goal to raise more than $1 million.
Motorsports: Brendon Hartley will race for Toro Rosso at next weekend’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, as a replacement for Pierre Gasly. The Frenchman will be competing in the last race of the Super Formula Championship in Japan at the same time. Hartley, 27, tested with Toro Rosso in 2009, but it will be the New Zealander’s first F1 race.
NBA: The Cavaliers agreed to send forward Richard Jefferson, guard Kay Felder, two second-round draft picks and at least $3 million in cash to the Hawks, ESPN reported. Atlanta reportedly intends to waive Jefferson and Felder.
