Condo fire in Boynton leaves 15 homeless
Four families were ousted by the blaze, which broke out before 8 a.m. Friday; one man was hurt jumping from second story.
BOYNTON BEACH — Fifteen people were left homeless after a fire damaged a Boynton Beach condominium complex early Friday, according to city authorities and the American Red Cross.
A “middle-aged” man seeking safety jumped about 8 feet from a second story at the Crossings of Boynton Beach, off North Federal Highway near Gateway Boulevard, Deputy Chief Latosha Clemons said.
She said the man was taken to Bethesda Hospital East for evaluation, but his injuries were not serious. The man was one of two people taken to Bethesda for medical evaluations, city officials said.
Four families, consisting of eight adults and seven children, were displaced by the fire and are receiving aid from the Red Cross. One of the displaced adults was a pregnant woman.
The fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. and one building was “fully engulfed” when crews arrived, the city said.
Two of the four residences were “totally destroyed” and the other two sustained damage, said Luis Garcia, an emergency-response supervisor for 911 Restoration of Florida, who said he was called to the scene early Friday.
The Florida State Fire Marshal was called in to assess the scene, Garcia said.
