WEST PALM BEACH — A woman told authorities her former boyfriend violated a restraining order last week and that the father of her child shot at him in suburban West Palm Beach.

Reginald McKelvin, 45, is in the Palm Beach County Jail, charged with attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and possession of a weapon by a felon. He is being held without bail.

Anthony Waldon also was arrested Friday, charged with contempt of court for violating the no-contact order. He left Saturday morning under supervised release.

According to a Palm Beach County sheriff’s arrest report, deputies went to the 6800 block of Barbados Way West, near Haverhill Road and 45th Street, at about 7:30 a.m. Friday after a caller reported hearing five to seven shots. There, they found McKelvin being chased by Waldon, 32, of Riviera Beach.

A woman who lives at the home told deputies McKelvin has lived with her as a boyfriend off and on for 11 years and is the father of her child. The jail entry also lists that as McKelvin’s address.

She said she and Waldon lived together for about eight months but broke up around two months ago. She said he has been harassing her and that she obtained a no-contact order.

The woman said she had returned home after taking her 9-year-old to the school bus stop when Waldon began banging on her car window. She said she tried to pull her car out and that Waldon threatened to break one of its windows. She raced backwards, striking a mailbox, then called 911.

Waldon later told deputies that as he had approached the woman’s car, McKelvin, whom he knows from previous encounters, came out of the home with a revolver and began shooting. He said he told McKelvin, “Is that the best shot you’ve got?” He said McKelvin ran back into the home and out the back door and he chased him.

The report says McKelvin refused to cooperate but denied having a firearm. The woman did confirm to deputies she had a gun in her home, but it was a 9 mm pistol, rather than a revolver.

Deputies found a bullet hole in the woman’s car and found an intact bullet, of either .38- or .357-caliber, on the ground in front of the house, the report said.

Deputies later found a .357-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver in a jacket in a closet in the master bedroom.

The report said McKelvin has nine felony convictions in Florida, the most recent in 2014 on drug charges, and so is not permitted to have a firearm.

On Saturday morning, Circuit Judge Glenn D. Kelly ordered McKelvin held without bail. Prosecutors said he had nine previous charges of failing to appear in court. The woman was in court but did not speak.

A public defender argued the attack was a case of self-defense.
