U.S. women capture 18th Fed Cup title

The United States won its 18th Fed Cup title and the first since 2000 with a 3-2 win against Belarus. CoCo Vandeweghe and Shelby Rogers beat Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandr­a Sasnovich 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the deciding doubles of the final in Minsk, Belarus. Sasnovich had kept Belarus alive after beating U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens 4-6, 6-1, 8-6 to leave the final even at 2-2. Vandeweghe earlier beat Sabalenka 7-6 (5), 6-1 to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

The U.S. holds the most Fed Cup titles in the internatio­nal competitio­n. This was its fourth Fed Cup final since last winning in 2000.

ATP Finals: Roger Federer, the 19-time Grand Slam champion, broke Jack Sock in the first game of a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory in the season-ending event at O2 Arena in London. Both then held serve the rest of the way. In the late match of the round-robin event, Alexander Zverev beat Marin Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Formula One: Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo to solidify his hold on second place after Lewis Hamilton clinched the season title two weeks ago. Pole sitter Valterri Bottas finished second with Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari taking third. Hamilton was fourth.

NHRA: Brittany Force became the first female Top Fuel season champion since Shirley Muldowney in 1982 in the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona, Calif. Force, the daughter of 16-time Funny Car champ John Force, wrapped up the title in the quarterfin­als and went on to win the event at Auto Club Raceway, her fourth victory of the year. TOP 25

■ (At) No. 5 Kentucky 73, Vermont 69: Hamido Diallo and P.J. Washington each scored 16 points to help the Wildcats (2-0) hold off the Catamounts (0-1). Washington added 10 rebounds, and Quade Green contribute­d 15 points. Trae Bell-Haynes let Vermont with 16 points and five assists.

■ (At) No. 12 Miami 89, Navy 55: D.J. Vasiljevic scored 16 points, Dewan Huell added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jacquan Newton had 14 points as the Hurricanes (2-0) cruised past the Midshipmen (1-1). Hasan Abdullah scored 13 points to lead Navy.

■ (At) No. 16 Louisville 72, George Mason 61: Deng Adel had 20 points, and freshmen Darius Perry (17) and Jordan Nwora (10) combined to score 22 in the second half to rally the Cardinals (1-0) past the Patriots (1-1) to win David Padgett’s debut as Louisville’s interim coach. Jaire Grayer had 20 points and Justin Kier 18 for George Mason, which led 46-45 with 11 minutes remaining.

■ (At) Georgetown 73, Jacksonvil­le 57: Patrick Ewing made a successful head coaching debut at his alma mater as Jessie Govan had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Hoyas (1-0) over the Dolphins (0-2). Marcus Derrickson added 20 points for Georgetown; JD Notae had 18 for Jacksonvil­le.

(At) Capitals 2, Oilers 1 (SO): T.J. Oshie scored the only goal of the shootout. Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots through overtime and all three Edmonton shootout shots.

Lightning 2, (at) Ducks 1: J.T. Brown scored a tiebreakin­g goal in the third period as Tampa Bay avenged one of its only two regulation losses and won its fourth straight.
