Cards, Giants pursue Stanton
Rumored offffffffffffer for Stanton: Panik, two top prospects.
MIAMI—Trade talks involving Marlins outfielder G ian carlo Stanton have begun to intensify, according to multiple reports.
The San Francisco Giants of ff ff ff ff ff fe red second baseman Joe Panik and two prospects for Stanton and second baseman Dee Gordon, according to Sirius XM Radio’s Craig Mish.
The Miami Herald previously reported that the Marlins want to trade Stanton, Gordon and third baseman Martin Prado in an attempt to trim payroll from $115 million to $ 90 million.
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals have offered a package for Stanton, according to Fox’s Jon Paul Morosi. Their offffffffffffer is believed to be built around young pitching prospects.
According to Mish, the Giants are offering righthanded pitcher Tyler Beede and left-handed-hitting outfifielder/ fifirst baseman Chris Shaw, in addition to Panik, but the Giants want both Stanton and Gordon in return. It’s unclear how much of the Stanton and Gordon contracts that the Giants would be willing to assume.
Stanton is due $ 25 million next season and $295 million over the fifinal 10 years of his contract.
Gordon is due $10.5 million next season and $37 million guaranteed over the next three seasons, with a $14 million team option for 2021.
Panik, 27, hit .288 with 10 homers and 53 RBIs in 138 games last season and is a .282 career hitter. He earned $600,000 last season but is arbitration- eligible for the fifirst time this winter and under team control for the next three seasons.
An All-Star in 2015, Panik is considered strong defensively; he had nine errors last season and won a Gold Glove in 2016.
Shaw, 23, hit .292 with 24 homers and 79 RBIs last season, splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A.
Beede, the Giants’ fifirstround pick out of Vanderbilt in 2014, is San Francisco’s No. 3 overall prospect but struggled last season, going 6-7 with a 4.79 ERA for Triple-A Sacramento after going 8-7 with a 2.81 ERA at Double-A the previous season.
As for the Cardinals’ offffffffffffer, Mish reported right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara is one of the players St. Louis has dangled. He was 7-5 with a 4.31 ERA in Double-A last season and is the ninthrated prospect in the Cardinals’ farm system, according to mlbpipeline.com.
The Cardinals have two pitchers ranked among the top 50 prospects in baseball: right-handers Alex Reyes ( No. 14) and Jack Flaherty ( No. 47).
Stanton, who was born in Southern California, has a no-trade clause. But it’s widely believe he would be receptive to a trade to the Giants, though he has never said that publicly. Whether he would accept a trade to St. Louis is unclear.
The Dodgers have made a preliminary inquiry about Stanton, according to reports. And Fox’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox were expected to make a trade offer for Stanton.
