FAMU coach resigns

Offensive line aide Pata replaces Wood on interim basis.

-

Alex Wood has resigned as Florida A&M’s football coach, two days after the Rattlers completed their season.

Athletic Director Milton Overton Jr. said Monday that offensive line coach Edwin Pata will serve as interim coach.

Wood was 8-25 in three seasons. The Rattlers went 3-8 this season and 2-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after going 4-7 and 4-4 last year.

Wood’s contract was set to expire at the end of the year.

Pata has been a coach at his alma mater since 2013. He was the only assistant that Wood retained from the previous staff.

A search for a new coach will be led by John Eason, who becomes interim athletic director on Dec. 1.

Overton will become the athletic director at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta.

Syracuse QB to miss finale: Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey, who has missed the past two games with a lower-leg injury, likely will miss Saturday’s season finale at home against Boston College.

Syracuse coach Di no Babers hinted Monday at his weekly news conference that Dungey probably would not play, even though he’s listed as the starter on the depth chart.

Babers says he would bet that Dungey doesn’t play and that “I think he’ll be full-go by next year.”

Dungey suffered an injury to his right leg in the first quarter of a 27-24 loss last month at Florida State. A Seminoles defender landed on the leg while making a tackle.

The junior star returned after sitting out the better part of one quarter and accounted for three touchdowns, setting a career high with 109 yards rushing.

Syracuse (4-7, 2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has lost four straight.

South Alabama coach re signs: South Alabama coach Joey Jones submitted his resignation Monday, the school said.

Jones will continue to coach the football team until the end of his contract. The Jaguars visit New Mexico State on Dec. 2.

“There comes a time in every program where there is a need for change. For this program that I love so much, that time is now,” Jones said in a statement.

“One of the proudest days of my professional life was being named the first head coach at South Alabama. Today is difficult, but it is the right step for me, my family and for this football program.”

South Alabama is 4-7 this season andi sin seventh place in the Sun Belt Conference.

South Alabama launched its football program on Dec. 6, 2007, and Jones was hired as the team’s first head coach on Feb. 15, 2008.

South Alabama played its first game in 2009 in the Football Championship Subdivision and transitioned to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2013.
