BOYNTON BEACH — A Greenacres-area man’s attempt to steal a pickup from a Home Depot parking lot Saturday afternoon didn’t go as planned, according to city police.

The truck’s owner chased Robert Kellerman, climbed inside the Ford F350 and held the 54-year-old man down until police arrived, according to an arrest report.

Kellerman was arrested on charges of armed carjacking, cocaine possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to the arrest report, Boynton Beach officers found a knife in Kellerman’s pocket and a glass cylinder wrapped in tissue. Officers also found a pill bottle containing crack cocaine, the report said.

Kellerman remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of a $28,000 bail.

According to police, the incident happened shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Home Depot off Woolbright Road just west of Interstate 95.

A 40-year-old Boynton Beach man told police he was shopping when his cellphone alerted him that the truck’s alarm had sounded. When he got to the parking lot, the man saw an older model Chevy Tahoe backed in a parking space next to his vehicle. At first, he believed that vehicle may have bumped his truck and accidentally set off the alarm.

However, the man said he heard someone start his truck as he walked back to the store. Before the truck could leave the parking lot, the man ran after it, opened the driver-side door and climbed inside. He then began struggling with Kellerman, the arrest report said.

When police arrived, they placed Kellerman on the ground and took him into custody without incident.

The truck’s owner told police that the vehicle had been locked and alleged that Kellerman broke the door lock and punched the ignition to gain access.
