The Pap Corps — Champions for Cancer Research — celebrated its 65th anniversary with a spectacular gala luncheon for over 450 guests. The event was hosted by WPTV anchor Michael Williams and honored Jayne Sylvester Malfitano for her tremendous dedication to the organization, which raises research funds for all types of cancers. Boca Raton City Councilman, Robert Weinroth, presented the organization with a Proclamation declaring Pap Corps Day in Boca Raton.
Since its founding in 1952, The Pap Corps has donated more than $110 million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, including a historic $50 million pledge in 2016 dedicating The Pap Corps Campus at Sylvester at Deerfield Beach.
Jayne Sylvester Malfitano’s involvement with Sylvester dates back more than 20 years when her father, Harcourt Sylvester Jr., first pledged $27.5 million to the University of Miami to build a cancer center in honor of his parents. Since that time, Malfitano’s commitment to cancer care in South Florida has only deepened. Today, she is Vice-Chair of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Governors.
The Pap Corps derives its name from Dr. George Papanicolaou, a pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection. A small group of women began the organization to support his efforts, and over the decades it has grown into an organization of over 20,000 men and women, in over 50 chapters throughout South Florida.
