BOYNTON BEACH — A man who Boynton Beach police say knocked his live-in girlfriend unconscious and rolled his car over her in 2016 has been sentenced to five years in prison, court records show.

Joseph Anthony Costa, 39, who originally was charged with attempted first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder, as well a second charge of domestic battery on Nov. 15, records show.

The five years in prison, minus credit of 571 days — about a year and a half — will be followed by 10 years of probation, records show. Costa also will pay $1,008 in court costs and will provide $60,000 in restitution to the woman.

On the second charge, Costa, who was in the county jail for about a year, was sentenced to time served.

“It was a fair resolution that met with the acceptance of all parties,” Costa’s attorney, Michael Salnick, said Tuesday.

According to a Boynton Beach police report, on April 23, 2016, Acosta attacked the woman, then 33, in the driveway of their home, in a neighborhood along Congress Avenue between Hypoluxo and Miner roads.

The report said the woman struck her head when Costa first shoved her. He then drove a blue Chevrolet Cruze over her body, dragging her, then backed over her before driving off.

The woman was taken to Delray Beach Medical Center for treatment. Costa was arrested that night.

Records show Costa was arrested in four domestic violence incidents in the year preceding the incident, all of them involving the woman. In each case, the charges were dropped.
