Davis, six down, wins Australian Open
Cameron Davis came from six shots behind going into the final round to win the Australian Open by one stroke Sunday, shooting a 7-under 64 that included a birdie on the 18th and an eagle after holing a 100-meter approach shot.
The 22-year-old Australian finished with a 13-under total of 273 at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney, where gusty and unpredictable afternoon winds made scoring tough for all four rounds.
Sweden’s Jonas Blixt, who missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff, shot 68 to finish tied for second with Matt Jones (68), while thirdround leader Jason Day was fifth after a 73, three strokes behind.
Davis, Blixt and Jones also qualified for next July’s British Open at Carnoustie.
Jordan Spieth, attempting to win his third Australian Open in four years, finished at 4-under 67, including an eagle on the last hole. He was eighth, five strokes behind Davis.
European Tour: Despite a bogey on the final hole, Australia’s Wade Ormsby earned his first tour win with a final-round 2-under 68 to take the Hong Kong Open.
Ormsby finished at 11-under 269. A group of four was one shot back: Rafa Cabrera Bello (69); Americans Julian Suri (66) and Paul Peterson (67); and Sweden’s Alexander Bjork (68).
Tommy Fleetwood (69) was alone in sixth at 9-under 271.
