Singletary leads Owls’ honorees By Jake Elman

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic running back Devin Singletary can add another accomplish m ent to his resume.

Singletary, an American Heritage graduate currently leading the nation with 29 rushing touchdowns, was one of a league-high seven Owls named to the All-Conference USA first team Tuesday. The school’s leader in rushing touchdowns with 41, Singletary also has run for 1,794 yards this season. Three of the Owls’ offen

linemen made first-team all conference: Roman Fernandez (Seminole Ridge), Antonyo Woods and Reggie Bain. On defense, the firstteam players were safety Jalen Young, cornerback Shelton Lewis and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

Tight end Harrison Bryant, who leads the team with five receiving touchdowns, was the only Owl named to the C-USA second team.

FAU coach Lane Kiffin showed support for his players through Twitter, reminding his nearly 380,000 followers that no Owls were named to the preseason teams.

“(Thanks) for the miracle grow!” Kiffin tweeted.

Florida Atlantic, which finished the regular season 10-3 (9-0 in C-USA), won the conference championsh­ip and will play Akron in the Boca Raton Bowl, placed 11 Owls on the honorable mention list: quarterbac­k Jason Driskel, running back Buddy Howell and defensive linemen Steven Leggett, Leighton McCarthy, Hunter Snyder and Jeremiah Taleni. Cornerback Chris Tooley and safety/linebacker Andrew Soroh were also named honorable mention.

McCarthy and wide receiver Willie Wright (706 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns) were on the all-conference freshman team.

Two other local products, kicker Greg Joseph (American Heritage) and running back/kick returner Kerrith Whyte (Seminole Ridge) joined long snapper John Clancy as honorable mentions among the special teamers.

Conference USA will anno u nce seven o ther awards today, including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year. Singletary is the front-runner for MVP and top offensive player, while Al-Shaair (133 tackles) and Young (70 tackles, seven intercepti­ons) are among the top candidates for top defensive player.
