High-speed Greenacres crash kills 2

Speeding car’s collision with SUV captured on store security cameras.

GREENACRES — Two people were killed in a violent crash that took place in a Greenacres neighborhood early Saturday morning, a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.

Security cameras at Family Grocery recorded the crash at about 4:30 a.m. at Swain Boulevard and Second Street, showing at least one person being ejected from a vehicle and lying motionless on the ground.

The recording shows a silvery SUV coming across Second, where there is no stop sign. Then another silvery car blazes down Swain, runs the stop sign and tears into a corner of the SUV.

In fractions of a second, the SUV whips around. Debris sprays off. The rear driver’s-side door comes open and at least one person flies out, landing near an ice freezer at Family Grocery. A wheel comes off the SUV and rolls, coming to rest not far from the motionless person.

The driver of the SUV gets out and bends over, holding himself up with his hands on his thighs. A woman in the SUV was thrown into an airbag close to the store’s security-gated front door; the security camera recording shows the roof crumpled above her head.

The store’s owner, Muhammad Monirul Islam, told The Palm Beach Post he had provided the video recordings to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which provides law enforcement in Greenacres and has an outpost across the street.

The recording shows a sheriff ’s deputy and firefighters arriving and looking over the man near the ice machine. No one renders aid. He does not move.

Islam did not witness the crash but said a close viewing of the recordings shows a second person being ejected from the SUV.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said Saturday night that two people died in the crash.

She also said neither was the fast car’s driver, whom sheriff’s deputies were still trying to find Saturday night.

The crash is under investigation and a report will be released when details are available, Barbera said.

Greenacres Fire Rescue Division Chief Mark Jakubek confirmed that emergency rescue workers were at the scene early Saturday but did not provide details.

According to the time stamp on the recording, the crash happened at 4:28 a.m.

The force of the crash ripped out chunks of the sidewalk and smashed parts of the grocery’s ice freezer.
