Hopeful there will be a resolution to DACA
How refreshing to read in the Palm Beach Post that the thousands of young people brought illegally into our country by their parents will, most likely, be given the opportunity to be granted a permanent solution as regards their futures. (“Young immigrants to wait until ’18 to learn their fate in U.S.,” Wednesday)
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) should never have been done by executive order in a temporary way. These young people had no choice but to come with parents who entered our country illegally, and they all deserve a permanent solution.
While many of us realize the serious consequences to turning a blind eye on illegal immigration activity, we also are aware that these young people had no choice in coming here illegally. Over years, many have immersed themselves in positive ways here in the U.S.
It is time to give them a path to American citizenship by allowing those who wish to become American citizens to be vetted and to be able to work toward achieving citizenship.
Three very important facts that give me great hope that there will be a resolution to DACA: First, this vote is going to be bipartisan legislation. Second, the decision is being made through congressional legislation rather than by executive order.
And last, Sen. Jeff Flake’s, R-Ariz., (a frequent Trump critic) observation that he has been impressed by “President Trump’s commitment to protect the young immigrants” gives me great hope that our president recognizes what must be done by Congress for these young people. CATHY YONKERS, JUPITER
