Elect decent representatives

-

Old social studies textbooks tell us that we have a representative government where officials are elected to express the consent of the governed. Yet Florida’s demands are regularly ignored. No one seems to remember this at the polls, and at every election, we end up with an old crop of special-interest puppets.

Two examples: Florida Forever and medical marijuana. Both slew the Goliath citizen initiative burden, before passing with overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle.

Seventy-five percent demanded funds be used to acquire land for conservation. Since then, the Legislature has misappropriated the funds to pay for things like payroll. Seventy-two percent demanded medical marijuana for people with specific diseases or conditions. Since then, we have endured a disingenuous attempt at providing this health care to favor special-interest providers.

As the session begins this week, Florida voters need to take a hard look at where their money is going. It’s time to weed out the proven liars, those who do not carry out the wishes of their constituents. In November, it will be time to give a fresh crop a chance. Then, they cut taxes for the obscenely rich, so more programs for the working class can be cut. Is this making America great again? DUANE FLEMING, PALM BEACH GARDENS
