Suncoast coach May resigns

Chargers posted first winning record in a decade in 2017.

After two successful seasons at Suncoast, Bobby May has resigned as head football coach.

Hired in March 2016 to replace Jimmy Clark, May led the Chargers to a 4-6 record and the District 15-5A championship in his first season.

This year, Suncoast finished with a winning record for the first time in more than a decade.

The Chargers went 6-3, and just missed the postseason under the Florida High School Athletic Association’s new playoff system.

May, who played high school football at Dwyer, said he was stepping aside to pursue other opportunities.

“I am looking for a better opportunity to move to a state where teachers and coaches are appreciated,” said May, who teaches social studies at Suncoast. “With my wife being pregnant, it is just the right time to do that.

“I love Suncoast and everything it stands for, and we are very proud of what we accomplished here.”

Suncoast finished 10-9 in May’s two seasons. A handful of Chargers signed to play college football during his tenure, with linebacker K’Jakyre Daley signing with Oklahoma last year, and safety Tyler Chisholm opting for Davidson (N.C.) College, also in 2016.

Several other Chargers players could sign next month on national signing day.

May, who coached at Palm Beach Lakes and Palm Beach Gardens before arriving at Suncoast, plans to finish out the year at the Riviera Beach school.
