Demolishing a vacant building to build a 700-unit storage structure and a new dog leash law were approved Tuesday night by the Jupiter Town Council.

The vote was 4-1, with CouncilmanJim Kuretski dissenting, on the proposal to demolish the former Ellison Graphics structure on the south side of Indiantown Road at Commerce Way, across from the Jupiter Medical Center Urgent Care Clinic.

The proposal by Hilton Head, S.C.-based Pinnacle Storage calls for replacing the 21,000-squarefoot structure with a three-story, climate-controlled building that would be 97,500 square feet. The large size worried Kuretski. “The building is too much ... It’s going to be a massive building unlike any other on Indiantown Road,” he said.

In other action, the council unanimously approved a new dog leash law for Cinquez Park, which is scheduled to open in the spring.

Dogs were allowed to walk without a leash in Jupiter parks as long as they are under voice control, which means they respond to voice orders from their owners.

The new law requires that dogs be on a leash when they are in dog parks in Jupiter. Once the dogs enter the fenced-in areas designated for dogs, they can be taken off their leash.

The new leash law has nothing to do with Dog Beach, the 2-mile stretch north of Marcinski Road where dogs are allowed to roam without leashes.

Cinquez Park, which has a 2-acre wetlands area, will is be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.
