The records continue to fall for the Wellington boys basketball team under longtime coach Matt Colin.

The Wolverines, who have won four straight district championships and a state title during Colin’s tenure, broke a school record for consecutive wins Tuesday night against North Miami Beach-Scheck Hillel Community School.

Wellington’s 62-33 victory over the Lions was its 17th straight. Bryan Williams scored a game-high 18 points, and Texan Moulton added 10 points and eight rebounds for the unbeaten Wolverines in the win.

“This confirms my belief that this is an outstanding team that works extremely hard,” Colin said. “It gives the players the incentive to continue to perform on a high level each and every game.”

Wellington hasn’t lost a game since a 52-50 setback to Kissimmee-Osceola last March in a Class 9A state semifinal in Lakeland.

This season, the Wolver- ines had to replace most of the starters from that team, including two-time Palm Beach Post Player of the Year Trent Frazier.

But Wellington hasn’t lost a step.

Led by Williams, a senior guard averaging 19 points per game, as well as a strong group of players that includes Moulton, Jon Philistin, Linton Brown and Nico Toledo, the Wolverines have been dominant in and out of district play.

Wellington currently sits atop the District 9-9A standings, and Colin looks forward to the Wolverines defending their title next month. But he’s taking no one for granted.

“Our postseason goals are always the same,” he said. “We take it game by game. We want to be in a position to have a first-round bye, win the second round and then compete for the district title.

“After that, again back to game by game, win the regional quarterfinal, then semifinal, then final and ultimately go to states and compete for a state title.”
