Kiffin reels in prospects for the Owls

- By Jake Elman

BOCA RATON — One of Lane Kiffin’s biggest recruiting weekends at Florida Atlantic has ended with several major commitments.

In addition to Palm Beach Lakes athlete and three-star recruit Teja Young, Kiffin also earned commitments from junior-college center Zack Bennett (Arizona Western) and three-star cornerback Meiko Dotson (Garden City C.C., Kansas). Bennett is not currently ranked by recruiting services.

Orlando three-star defensive end Jalen Joyner ( Jones) committed to FAU on Wednesday, nearly a month after his teammate Franklin Jackson. Young joined the growing list of recruits who pointed to Kiffin’s presence as a major factor in their decision.

“Knowing like who he is, when he came to the house, it was like really crazy,” Young told The Post on Sunday by phone.

Bennett said he believes learning from the Kiffin family — Lane’s younger brother, Chris, will return as defensive coordinator and pro liaison Monte Kiffin is likely to remain around the program — will help prepare him for a chance at professional football. FAU has never had an offensive lineman play in a regular-season NFL game.

“I really think there’s a good chance (at making the NFL) because they have so much NFL experience on the staff,” Bennett said. “(Lane) is a very cool guy, you can see he’s got a bond with his players. I think I wanted to be a part of that and that’s why I was super intrigued by him.”

With all-conference center Antonyo Woods graduating, Bennett likely will be expected to start. Young, who played quarterback and defensive back for the Rams, said he will primarily play defense and return kicks for the Owls.

Despite the recent losses of Jason Driskel (retirement) and former Dwyer star Daniel Parr (transfer), Young will not be asked to come to camp as a quarterback.
