Know the limit for injectable fillers
Question: Why do some women look overfilled with a puckered-lip “fish” look after getting injectables around their mouth?
Answer: When injectable facial fillers are done correctly, most women (and men, because many men are now using fillers as well) will not get the trout mouth or puckered-lip look. But, unfortunately, the temptation and desire to eliminate every wrinkle can result in overfilling an area and creating distortion. For example, when just a top lip is filled and the bottom is ignored, an imbalanced look can occur, creating an unnatural look.
Some patients have a strong desire to achieve a certain look, so they request and seek more and more filler for an area. But there is a limit — at least in our office!
The hyaluronic acid fillers of Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Perlane® and Belotero are the most popular for enhancing the peri-oral area, marionette lines, nasal folds or lips. Some are more appropriate for specific areas and that, again, is where the injector’s technique is key.
In our office, we find our patients’ results last about six to 12 months and — in many cases — longer, before they are coming in again for their next treatment or further enhancement.
There are certain products on the market that promise longer results, but they are not always recommended in the lips or peri-oral area, so discuss options with your injector before you proceed.
