Edvin Milkevic, a 29-year-old restaurant worker in Margate, appears to have been shot on the interstate, police say.

BOCA RATON — In the early hours Wednesday, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper noticed a car fly past him and construction workers southbound on Interstate 95 in Boca Raton before inexplicably veering off the highway into a shallow grassy side median.

But when the trooper got to it he found the driver, Edvin Milkevic, had been fatally shot, police say.

Between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., as workers were paving southbound I-95 near Clint Moore Road, Milkevic’s black sports car struck a safety barrel, then slid off the road.

The 29-year-old Boca Raton man wasn’t speeding, police said.

For now, the details leading up to the crash remain a mystery.

“There wasn’t any damage to the car,” Boca Raton police spokesman Mark Economou said. He said Boca Raton Fire-Rescue took Milkevic to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“We don’t know where he was shot. We believe he was shot on I-95,” Economou said. “We don’t know by who at this point. We don’t know where he was coming from.”

Economou said police won’t definitely say it was a homicide, as opposed to a suicide, but called the fatal shooting “suspicious.” He said the man was in the car when he was shot.

Milkevic worked at Pasta And restaurant in Margate, where he “handled everything” from management to waiting tables and running food, friend Pierce Brehm said.

Brehm said he met Milkevic at Pasta And about five years ago.

“He was the most genuine person I’ve ever met,” Brehm said. “If you ever needed someone, he’d be here.”

The pair partnered to open Boca Raton-based Dash Capital Partners, which never quite took off and hasn’t been active for a year, Brehm said.

Southbound I-95 was closed for several hours, bottling up morning rush hour traffic before it reopened. Traffic, however, remained slow until late morning.

The Highway Patrol handed off the case to Boca Raton police. FHP and local departments essentially take turns handling such deaths on highways, depending on circumstances.

The Highway Patrol handled the June 20 “road rage” stabbing death of Duvarn Fraser by two brothers on I-95 in Rivera Beach. FHP says its investigation of that is not done.

The Florida Highway Patrol stressed that the shooting was not related to one along Interstate 95 in Lantana later in the morning.

A man who had shot someone the previous day in West Palm Beach fatally shot a woman outside a Lake Worth grocery store, then raced the wrong way down northbound Interstate 95, and got into three separate head-on crashes with a total of at least a half dozen other motorists in Lantana, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office.

Minutes later, a sheriff ’s deputy shot and killed him.
