A project with a price tag of more than $1 million is underway to repave the westernmost section of Okeechobee Boulevard.

The stretch of Okeechobee from Seminole Pratt Whitney Road to Royal Palm Beach Boulevard will be resurfaced for $1.22 million, according to county documents. That price tag includes a $922,000 contract with Ranger Construction Industries Inc. for the repaving and $100,000 to restripe the road once the repaving is complete.

Work began last week at night and will be completed by the end of the month.

“That’s all contingent on if the weather holds out,” assistant county engineer Steve Carrier said.

Electronic message signs have been placed on Okeechobee Boulevard at both ends of the project — just east of Seminole Pratt Whitney and just west of Royal Palm Beach Boulevard.

There will be some lane closures overnight, Carrier said, and traffic will be directed along the stretch of Okeechobee through Loxahatchee Farms where the road is two lanes.

Payment for the $922,000 contract comes from the county share of the 1-cent sales surtax approved by voters in 2016.

It’s one of about 20 resurfacing projects this year the surtax revenue is paying for, Carrier said. Almost $80 million will be spent on resurfacing in Palm Beach County over the 10-year life of the surtax, he said.

Ranger is one of two resurfacing contractors being used by the county this year along with Community Asphalt, Carrier said.
