Businesses helping with fundraising

Across Palm Beach County, people are doing what they can to help Parkland Shooting victims whether by donating to the GoFundMe page, which already raised $1.7 million, or donating blood.

Now, local businesses are getting involved, too.

Last week, Premier Family Health and Wellness in Wellington held a blood drive where more than 100 people showed up and 88 pints of blood were collected. Staffers at the practice had ties to the school but even for businesses that don’t, they feel it’s time to get involved.

“It really hit home to a lot of us,” said Joe Ardagna, owner of Slash Fitness. “At Slash, we make it a priority to give back to the community. We pick a new charity each month. For us, it’s not just about the fitness; it’s also about our community and helping others.”

Slash Fitness will be one of the many businesses in Palm Beach County hosting fundraisers the next couple weeks for those affected by the Parkland shooting.

Slash Fitness in Delray Beach:

The gym is having a blood drive Monday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those who donate blood are eligible for a free fitness class. Also inside, patrons can “torture the trainer,” which is where people can put money in a trainer’s jar, spin a wheel filled with exercises and watch as the trainers perform them. All donations will go directly to the victims.

Cabo Flats:

Six Cabo Flats locations are hosting a fundraiser lunch Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., where a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the families of the shooting victims. The following locations are participating: Dolphin Mall, Doral CityPlace, Pembroke Pines, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach and Jupiter.

Mellow Mushroom in West Palm Beach:

Today, the CityPlace Mellow Mushroom will be donating 10 percent of all sales to the GoFundMe page for the Stoneman Douglas victims and their families. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
