Portions of the Wellington Dog Park will close temporarily as village crews complete long-planned pathways.

Signs posted at the popular spot alert dog owners that the southern portions of the park will begin to close this week, with work ongoing through mid-March. The park tentatively will reopen March 26, weather permitting, according to a village news release.

The park includes four areas: two for large dogs, one for medium dogs and one for small dogs. The northern section of the park, which is one of the large-dog areas, already has a path. But the three other sections have limited pathways — just enough to get dogs and their owners into each fenced-in area, then over to a shady pavilion.

All three sections will not close at the same time, said Assistant Village Manager Jim Barnes. The first to close will be the south side of the large dog area. Then the medium-sized dog area will close, and those dogs will be able to play in the freshly redone large-dog area. The last area to see work will be the smalldog area, Barnes said.

The work will be done by Wynn & Sons Environmental Construction Co. Inc. to the tune of $87,795.

In addition to pathways, the contractor will lay new sod and do work to help improve drainage and relieve some of the areas where water can pool, village documents show.
